The incentives for her to accept him are strong, but she is honest enough to tell him that she does not return his affections. She, on the other hand, is poor, and can expect a future of increasing poverty if she does not marry. ![]() What she knows is that he is rich, handsome, clever, and very much in love with her. I reviewed the first book in this series and my conclusion was that it didn't know what it wanted to be. I will most definitely not be getting Book 3 when it comes out. I lost interest and didn't care what happened to the characters, as they were really getting on my nerves! It's quite sad that it seems the author wanted to turn the brilliant story that he started in The Passage into a trilogy just for the sake of it. The characters that I Ioved in Book 1 are totally unrecognisable and the story drags on without purpose. It's like the book has been written by a different author. To say that I was bitterly disappointed by The Twelve would be a criminal understatement! The great narration by Scot Brick is still there, but the quality in the writing and story that was present in The Passage is gone. ![]() Therefore, I had eagerly awaited the release of The Twelve and downloaded it on its first day of release on Audible. ![]() ![]() I found that the story was fresh, well written and totally engrossing - and the narration by Scot Brick was excellent. The Passage was one of my absolute favorite books. ![]() ![]() ![]() So by the time the story rolled around and the words “This is really good” came out of the otherwise down-turned lips of my fifth grade teacher, I was well on my way to understanding that a lie on the page was a whole different animal - one that won you prizes and got surly teachers to smile. ![]() After lots of brouhaha, it was believed finally that I had indeed penned the poem which went on to win me a Scrabble game and local acclaim. That year, I wrote a story and my teacher said “This is really good.” Before that I had written a poem about Martin Luther King that was, I guess, so good no one believed I wrote it. Of course I got in trouble for lying but I didn’t stop until fifth grade. I loved lying and getting away with it! There was something about telling the lie-story and seeing your friends’ eyes grow wide with wonder. Not “Once upon a time” stories but basically, outright lies. I loved and still love watching words flower into sentences and sentences blossom into stories. ![]() I chalked stories across sidewalks and penciled tiny tales in notebook margins. (It was not pretty for me when my mother found out.) I wrote on paper bags and my shoes and denim binders. I remember my uncle catching me writing my name in graffiti on the side of a building. I used to say I’d be a teacher or a lawyer or a hairdresser when I grew up but even as I said these things, I knew what made me happiest was writing. ![]() ![]() ![]()
![]() ![]() As she described to HuffPo, like her lead character Natasha, Yoon is an immigrant from Jamaica who moved to Brooklyn when she was 11. And while it isn't exactly based on true-to-life events, it takes a little bit of inspiration from the author's own life. The film is an adaptation of the New York Times bestselling young adult novel of the same title, written by Nicola Yoon, author of Everything, Everything. It's a tale that speaks to current events, but is The Sun Is Also A Star based on a true story? The Sun Is Also A Star, which premieres on May 17, is very honest and authentic in its portrayal not only of a teen love story, but also of an immigrant narrative, as it follows Natasha Kingston (Yara Shahidi) through her last day in the US, as she and her family face the threat of deportation. Because these movies are based on real stories from real people, they're also really relatable. Think Eat, Pray, Love, The Theory of Everything, The Vow - the list goes on and on.
